When does non-REM sleep occur?

A

at the start of the night

What happens biologically during non-REM sleep?

A

synchronised, rhythmic EEG activity; partial muscle relaxation; reduced cerebral blood flow;

What happens biologically during REM sleep?

A

EEG shows fast activity- similar to wakefulness; atonic muscles; cerbral blood flow increased; impaired thermal regulation

What is the difference between dreaming in NREM and REM?

A

in NREM there isnt dreaming per se but there are some non-narrative images whereas in REM there is narrative dreaming

What is the function of REM sleep?

A

mainly for early brain development which is likely dispensable in adults

A

25 hours

How is bodyclock reset everydya?

A

behaviour cues and light- non-rod and non-cone cells are sensitive to certain freq of blue light which resets clock

What happens with lack of sleep?

A

prefrontal- irritable and suspicious; visual illusions; microsleeps and conc. lapses; doesn’t effect well-rehearsed tasks but does effect lateral thinking

What patients are REM parasomnias seen in?

A

pre- Parkinson’s

What happens in non-REM parasomnias?

A

confusional arousals; sleep alking; terros and paralyssi

A

age 15 and 36

Whta are the symtpoms of narcolepsy?

A

daytime sleepiness; cataplexy; hypnagog hallucinations; sleep paralysis; RBD

What is cataplexy?

A

loss of muscle tone triggered by emotion

What are hypnagogic hallucinations?

A

hallucinations occuring at sleep onset

What is RBD?

A

REM behviour disorder- loss of muscle atonia during REM
