SLEEP AS A PSYCHOGICAL CONSTRUCT Flashcards
(9 cards)
the consciousness continuum:
visual representation of the different states of consciousness from low levels of awareness to high levels of awareness.
consciousness can be divided into two types: Altered state of consciousness and normal walking stage of consciousness
the conscious continuum as a visual representation states:
normal walking consciousness (MOST AWARE):
Focused attention
Relaxed state
Daydreaming
Drowsy
Meditation
Sleep
Alcohol-induced
Anaesthetised
Coma
Normal walking consciousness:
- involves awareness on feelings, thoughts and behaviors
- internal and external events
- individual is awake and aware
Altered state of consciousness:
- characteristically different from walking consciousness - awareness, feelings and behavior
- occur naturally (i.e. daydreaming), interventions (i.e. medication)
HYPNOGRAM:
graph that represents the time period of each stage of sleep.
- typically follows a 90-minute cycle (ultradian)
ultradian - any cycle under the 24hr in our body is considered ultradian
stages of hypnogram?
NREM:
Stage 1 (NREM 1): light sleep, easily awakened, muscles relaxed
Stage 2 (NREM 2): light sleep, heart rate slows, body temp drops
Stage 3 (NREM 3): deep sleep, hard to wake up
REM:
- dreaming occurs
- body is paralyzed to prevent acting out dreams
- brain becomes more active
NREM tends to decrease as the night progresses, while REM periods increase
Adults spend about 80% in NREM and 20% in REM
sleep:
naturally occurring altered state of consciousness that is necessary for restoration and rejuvenation.
- loss of awareness
NREM:
- type of sleep
- lack of rapid eye movement
- subdivided into 3 stages
Stage 1 (NREM 1): light sleep, easily awakened, muscles relaxed
Stage 2 (NREM 2): light sleep, heart rate slows, body temp drops
Stage 3 (NREM 3): deep sleep, hard to wake up
REM:
- type of sleep
- rapid eye movement
- high levels of brain activity and low levels of physical activity
