sleep wake cycles Flashcards
(12 cards)
what are the sleep wake cycles
controlled by light, 3 types:
- nocturnal
- diurnal
- crepuscular
what happens in hibernation
Body’s processes will slow down almost completely, with reduced heart and breathing rates. Over winter
what is brumation
Hibernation but for ectotherms (cold blooded animals)
what is Aestivation
Hibernation but in warm seasons – summer sleep – triggered by lack of water
what is torpor
metabolism, heart rate, and breathing all slow down, however, torpor is more easily entered and emerged from and doesn’t last as long as true hibernation
when are diurnal animals awake
the day
when are crepuscular animals awake
dawn and dusk
give facts and advantages of being diurnal
access to daylight for hunting, photosynthisis and social interaction. plants often most nutritious during the day and fllowers are open and producing necter for pollinators
give facts and advantages of being crepuscular
reduced predatation risk, cooler temp, darkness can be good to hide
predators can use this period to take advantage of the fact that both diurnal ad nocturnal species are less vigilant
give facts and advantages of being nocturnal
avoid daytime heat and predators,
special sensory adaptations
when are nocturnal animals awake
at night
what are biological rhythms
periodic, regular changes in physical and mental state, generated internally
