What does the Data Protection Act do?
It covers your personal data and how it is used
What is a data subject?
Someone who has data about them outside of their control
What is a data controller?
Something that determines the organisation who has collected your data
What is a data commissioner?
Something that can enforce the Data Protection Act such as the government or police to get personal data for data breaches
What are the eight principles of data protection?
-Only held for specific reasons
-Data must be collected and used fairly and inside the law
-Only used for the registered purpose
-Only relevant data is stored
-Data must be accurate and up to date
-Data must be kept safe and secure
-No transfer outside the EEA unless the country as data protection laws
What does the Data Protection Act allow?
-Right of subject access
-Right of correction
-Right to prevent distress
-Right to prevent direct marketing
-Right to prevent automatic decisions
-Right to complain to a Information Commissioner
-Right to compensation
What was added to the Data Protection Act in 2018?
A law that makes Data Controllers have to be able to prove their Data Protection methods are sufficient
What is the Computer Misuse Act of 1990?
Made this illegal:
-Unauthorised access to another computer system
-Unauthorised access to digital materials with intent to commit further crime
-Unauthorised modification of data
-Making, supplying or obtaining tools to commit computer misuse offences
What is copyright?
Gives creators a right to their work so it can’t be stolen without permission
What is a patent?
An exclusive right granted for an invention which limits how it can be used by others
What is the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000?
A law that:
-Demands ISP provide access to customer communications
-Prevents interception activities from being revealed in court
-Allows mass surveillance of communication
-Allows monitoring of an individuals Internet activities
-Demands access to be granted protected information
What 4 things concerns RIPA?
-Invasion of privacy
-Freedom of speech
-Unnecessary censorship
-Improper use of RIPA
