SLT to gender Flashcards
(5 cards)
what does SLT suggest about gender?
Gender is learned from OBSERVING others. Draws attention to the influence of ENVIRO in shaping gender. Includes people child interacts with, parents, peers, media, culture.
what is DIRECT reinforcement?
children likely to be REINFORCED through PRAISE for displaying gender APPROPRIATE behaviour.
e.g. girls be more passsive and boys more rough.
Through this process, children LEARN their gender and what is ACCEPTABLE for them to do.
what is INDIRECT reinforcement?
children see how their ROLE models act and LEARN from the CONSEQUENCES of these actions. e.g. girl sees mum wear makeup and is complimented will learn that this is how women SHOULD behave for REWARDS. If punished behaviours are LESS likely to be imitated
what is identification and modelling?
Identification: when a child looks up to a ROLE MODEL as that person had rewarding qualities, we IMITATE behaviours of people we IDENTIFY with of the same gender which means we are learning gender APPROPRIATE behaviours through SLT.
Modelling: PRECISE demonstration of behaviour shown by a role model. Mothers may model stereotypical FEMININE behaviours like tidying, girl might COPY this behaviour which is the girl MODELLING the behaviour of the mother.
What are the 4 mediation processes:
1) Attention: boy might want to copy his favourite footballer so pays ATTENTION to what he does.
2) Retention: REMEMBERING details of footballer so he can try reproduce them.
3) Motivation: desire to REPEAT the behaviour to be his hero.
4) Motor reproduction: Boy must be physically CAPABLE of carrying out that particular behaviour.
