User SmartPhrase
A custom SmartPhrase created or edited by a user that acts as a shortcut to enter complex text quickly.
User SmartPhrases can often be created from System SmartPhrases, with some editing.

System SmartPhrase
SmartPhrases that are created and maintained by builders.
If a user tries to access certain SmartPhrases, there is a hierarchy in place to know which will output:
User > Profile > Department > Location > Facility

SmartLink
A SmartTool that pulls information from elsewhere in the patient’s chart / elsewhere in the system.
Ex: “.name” will pull in the current patients first / last name.

SmartList
Allows users to select appropriate text to customize notes.
Text that is displayed in {braces}, that helps the user know what kinds of choices will appear in a List.
(List choices are accessed by pressing F2)

SmartText
The original documentation tool in EpicCare, Texts are tools created / maintained by the builders.
Only Texts (not Phrases) can be setup to appear by default.
(Ex: Pediatric Patient template note, Work / School Excuse letters, etc.)

SmartForm Macros
A predefined set of values that can be pulled into a note with one click of the macro’s button.
Ex: From the “Physical Exam” SmartForm, clicking the pencil icon at the top allows to “Create Macro from current data” so that the information can be pulled automatically.
Notewriter
An activity that allows clinicians to use point & click functionality to compose notes in the sidebar.
NoteWriter provides SmartForms, which allow for discrete, reportable documentation and text generation quickly.
Epic’s Community Library
A library that is available for builders to search & view clinical content from other Epic organizations.
Ex: SmartTexts, SmartLists, etc can be imported directly into the current environment from the Community Library.
