Smoking and the risk of disease Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
why is carbon monoxide bad
A
- after smoking, 10% of the blood will be carrying carbon monoxide
- poisonous gas found in tobacco smoke and takes up some of the oxygen- carrying capacity of your blood
2
Q
why is smoking during pregnancy bad
A
- she is carrying oxygen for herself and the baby
- if she is carrying carbon monoxide, the foetus may not get enough oxygen and therefore it may not grow properly
- can lead to premature births, stilbirths
3
Q
what is bronchitis
A
- cilia are damaged
- globules cells produce more excess mucus reducing gas exchange
4
Q
what causes COPD
A
5
Q
why does smoking cause a risk of infection
A
- cilia in the trachea and bronchi that move mucus bacteria and dirt away from lungs are anaesthetised by some of the chemicals in tobacco smoke
- they stop working for a time allowing dirt and pathogens down into the lungs and increasing the risk of infections
6
Q
the build up of tar in the delicate lung tissue can lead to what
A
- breakdown of the structure of the alveoli causing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- this reduce SA:V of lungs leading to severe breathlessness and eventually death
7
Q
how does smoking increase the chances of a stroke
A
- increases cholestral which causes the thickening of artery walls and increase chances of a stroke
8
Q
how does smoking affect the heart
A
- smoking narrows the blood vessels in your skin
- nicotine makes the heart beat faster whilst other chemicals damage the line of the arteries
- this makes CHD more likely
- increases the risk of clot formation
- also increases blood pressure
- combination affects increases the risk of suffering cardiovascular disease include heart attacks and strokes
