Soc. 15-17 Flashcards
(29 cards)
VO2 max
- the volume of oxygen an athlete can consume while exercising at max capacity
What type of pump is the heart?
- a double pump
The right side of the heart …
- pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
The left side of the heart…
pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
What do arteries do?
- carry blood away from the heart, the aorta is the largest artery
What do veins do?
- veins carry blood back to the heart, the vena cava is the largest vein
The pulmonary artery
- the only artery that carries deoxygenated blood
What do the two atria’s do?
collect blood as it comes into the heart
What do the two ventricles do?
- pump blood out of the heart
Valves
between the atria to stop backflow of blood
Septum
divides the heart into two halves
Vena cava
brings deoxygenated blood from the body into the right atrium
Tricuspid valve
where the venous blood passes from the right atrium to the right ventricle
Biscupid valve
where the oxygenated blood passes through to the left ventricle
Cusp
a triangular fold or flap of a heart valve
Systole
The phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood from the chambers into the arteries
Diastole
The phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle relaxes and lets the chambers fill with blood
Blood pressure
Pressure of blood against the walls of the blood vessels, especially the arteries
Inspiration
Breathing in
Expiration
Breathing out
Oxygen debt
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of a physical activity to break down any lactic acid
Erythrocyte
Red blood cell
Leukocyte
White blood cell
Pathogen
An agent that causes disease
