Soc 16 : Structure Of The Blood Vessels Flashcards
(13 cards)
What do red blood cells do?
Transfers oxygen and carbon by allowing it to bind to the haemaglobin this allows it to remove the excess carbon and supply oxygen to the body
What do white blood cells do?
They act as a defence system and produce antibodies to fight against infection and diseases.
If an athlete has a disease or infection they may not be able to train/perform
What do platelets do?
Formed in bone marrow. They are tiny fragments that clump together to clot blood and stop bleeding.
If a performer gets an abrasion/cut the blood platelets will clot to stop the bleeding
What is the importance of plasma?
The main role is to take oxygen, nutrients, hormones and proteins to the parts pf the body that need it.
Cells also put their waste products into plasma. It then helps remove it from the body
What is the immune system?
The structures and processes in your body that stop disease
What is thrombokinase?
Substance involving blood clotting
What is serotonin?
Hormone that triggers the clotting process
What is erythrocyte?
Red blood cell
What is anaemia?
A condition where there is a lack of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood
What is haemoglobin?
A red protein in the blood that allows oxygen to attach to red blood
What is leukocyte?
White blood cell
What is a pathogen?
An agent that causes disease such as a virus
What is an antibody?
Chemical that destroys a pathogen
