what is the IV and DV in harlows experiment
iv- provision of food either by cloth mother or wire mother
dv- amount of contact time spent with wire and cloth mother
describe the procedure in harlows experiment?
baby Rhesus monkeys were separated from their real mothers and given two artificial ones, resulting in privation. The first condition was a mother made of wire that provided food and the cloth did not. The second condition the cloth mother provided food and the wire did not.
what were the key findings in harlows experiment?
objective quantitative
rhesus monkeys spent more time with the contact comfort surrogate than wire, regardless of which one provided food.
contributions to psychology from harlows?
showing that contact comfort and emotional security are more important for attachment than being fed, in the formation of the infant/mother attachment bond.
what were the criticisms in harlows experiment
generalisation from animal behaviour to human behaviour should not be made
humans are more complex than monkeys, so the experiment may not relate to humans.
the monkeys were taken outside of their natural environment which could have made them behave differently, hence giving invalid results
did not protect monkeys rom emotional & psychological harm.
