Affirm
state as a fact; assert strongly and publicly
Collective identity
the shared identity of a group of people with common language, culture, etc.
Collective rights
a person’s sense of belonging to a group typical shared within cultures
Sovereignty
the authority of a state to govern itself or another state
First Nations
the preferred term to refer to indigenous peoples, a wide umbrella term
Annuity
a fixed sum of money paid to someone each year, typically for the rest of their life
Reserve
a designated plot of land reserved for First Nations people, given to them by the government
Indian
the less preferred term to refer to First Nations people, this was used a long time ago
Entrenching
establish (an attitude, habitat, or belief) so firmly that change is very difficult or unlikely
Indian Act
the primary law that the Canadian government uses to administer “indian” status, it has to do with the First Nations people
Ethnocentrism
evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one’s own culture
Assimilate
a minority group or culture comes to resemble a society’s majority group or assume the values, behaviours, and beliefs of another group whether fully or partially
Publicly funded
financial support in part or in full with revenue generated by a local, state, or federal government
Inherent rights
Aboriginal peoples of Canada have the right to govern themselves in relation to matters that are internal to their communities
Scrip
a certificate entitling the holder to acquire possession of certain portions of public land
Autonomy
the right or condition of self-government
