what is labelling
process of attaching definitions and assumptions to an individual
What is the self fulfilling prophecy
When a false expectation or belief can be internalised to impact someone’s behaviour and make the belief come true
what is the difference between the labels given to the middle class and the working class
Middle class- ideal, able, smart, punctual
Working class- boisterous, unable, lazy
what is the impact of positive labelling
Positive labelling allowed middle class children to be in higher streams, and have higher expectations
What is negative labelling impact
Negative labels given to the working class leaded to more higher grade knowledge being kept away and keeping them at a lower stream.
what is the correlation of streams and parental backgrounds
People in higher streams in school usually come from parents with middle class occupations
people in lower streams usually come from parents with working class occupations
how can antischool subcultures form
due to low streams and negative labelling, children openly reject the rules of the school in rebellion
