What is Social Control?
Social Control is the regulation of human behaviour in order to create a safe and stable society.
What are the various institutions of Social Control in Society?
Customs, Norms, Folkways, Mores, Family, Religion, Political Institutions, Educational Institutions, Economic Institutions, Cultural Institutions and the Mass Media.
What are Social Norms?
Social norms are rules or standards or patterns of accepted behaviour.
What is the importance of Social Norms?
They reflect the values of society and they act as a means by which these values are transmitted and upheld.
What are Folkways?
Cultural traditions that are obsereved by members of society.
What are Customs?
actions or ways of behaving that is usual and traditional among the people in a particular group or place.
What are Mores?
Deal with more serious matters and which reflect and reinforce a societies moral values and expectations regarding moral behaviour.
What is the importance of Social Control?
To ensure the groups norms and rules are obeyed. To discourage the desire to deviate from the norm. To prevent the building of tension and conflict. To clarify what is acceptable to society. To defer deviation by a system of rewards and punishments. To provide opportunities to get rid of frustration.
What is an Institution?
Secondary groups set up for a particular purpose which may be social, political or economic. An institution can mean either an org/social norm.
What is an Institution as a Social Norm?
Generally accepted on written rules or standards of behaviour which reflects agreed values, endures over time and is passed on from one generation to the next.
What is an Institution as an org?
A formal secondary group which usually has an hierarchical structure, written rules, fixed sanctions, rituals, or symbols or marks of identity. Endures over a long time.
What are the functions of Institutions?
To socialize their members. To provide a sense of belonging for members. To encourage cooperation between members to reach common goals. To have values norms and mores which help social control. To help meet the basic needs of their members.
What are the characteristics of Institutions?
Written rules. Fomral org structure. Hierarchical structure. Socialization of members. Sanctions. Reawrds. Endures overtime. Can change overtime. Symbols and rituals. Serve needs of society.
What are the types of Institutions?
Educational, Social, Religious, Recreational, Economic and Political Institutions.
Examples of Educational Institutions:
School, College, Universities.
Examples of Social Institutions:
Family, Friends, hospitals, church, media.
Examples of Religious Institutions:
Church, temples, mosques,
Examples of Recreational Institutions:
Sports, parks, Clubs, Resorts.
Examples of Economic Institutions:
Banks, Unions, Corporations, Insurance companies, tax authorities and International Monetary Fund.
Examples of Political Institutions:
Government, NGO’s, Political party, Electoral institutions, Security.
What are the functions of Educational Institution?
Teaching skills essential for employment, carrying out research for the advancement of society, socializing individuals, transmition of the culture of society and to develop the individual morally. spiritually & physically.
What is Religion?
The belief in and worship of a supernatural power embodied in a personal God responsible for the creation and preservation of the universe.
What are the functions of Religion?
Provides members with a sense of identity and belonging. Establishes codes of conduct. Relieves fear, anxiety and frustration. Provides answers and gives reasons for existence. Provides direction and focuses for life’s journey. Teaches reverence for life. Reenforces the beliefs in supernatural beings.
