What is a Trade Union?
An association of workers of the same occupation, or with a common employer who have came together to protect and seek the interest of all members.
What is the moto of the Trade Union?
“In Unity Is Strength”
What are the roles of a Trade Union?
Plays an important role in the free market exchange. Contributes to the development of the country as workers bargain in an organized fashion. provides training, secures improved terms & conditions and meets with government to represent workers.
What are the functions of a Trade Union?
They secure higher wages for employees, ensures healthy working conditions and ensures that there is equity of treatment among all workers.
What are the types of Trade Unions?
General, Craft, Industrial and White Collar Union.
What is General union?
Membership is offered to all types of workers. Workers can be from different occupations, skills or unskilled and might come from any industry.
What is Craft union?
Members consist of workers who have the same skills. The workers might be working in different industries.
What is Industrial union?
All or most of the members are from a particular industry.
What is White Collar union?
A union which represents non-manual workers.
What is Collective Bargaining?
The process by which trade union officials representing workers, meet with employers to negotiate for higher wages and better working conditions.
What are the other means of solving industrial disputes instead of Collective Bargaining?
Conciliation and Arbitration.
What is Conciliation?
Where a third party is appointed to help find a solution, which is acceptable to both sides.
What is Arbitration?
Where both sides involved in a dispute request that it goes before an arbiter, whose verdict both sides agree to accept.
Stages of the Grievance Procedure:
Stage 1: Conciliation
Stage 2: Senior supervisor approached including Chief labor officer.
Stage 3: Referred to Minister of Labor.
Stage 4: Referred to Industrial Court
What are the strategies used by Trade Unions to ensure that their demands on behalf of the workers are met?
Go-Slow, Strike, Picketing, Work-To-Rule and Sick-Out.
What is Go-Slow?
Workers intentionally reduce their work pace of productivity without officially striking.
What is Picketing?
Workers gather outside a workplace to express grievances.
What is Work-To-Rule?
Workers strictly adhere to the exact terms of their contract/job description, refusing to go beyond what is specifically require.
What is Sick-Out?
Workers in large numbers call in sick to disrupt work operations.
What is Strike?
Workers stop working as a protest to demand changes from their employers.
