- supported by research
- does not completely explain why some group relations may involve friendly rivalry, while others descend into outright hostility and violence.
- explains inter-group rivalry in terms of the need for self-esteem and to feel your group is positive and distinctive. While this may be true, there are undoubtedly other factors that influence group relations (such as competition for scare resources, or historical relations between the groups) which SIT does not address
