State the 3 types of conformity.

State the difference between identification and internalisation.
- Identification = Opinion changes in public, not in private.
- Internalisation = Opinion changes both in public and private.
What is Informative social influence?
ISI is based on the quality of information and which group has the best information. When entering a new group we are often uncertain about what is right and wrong, by using the groups responses we determine what is correct.
What is Normative social influence?
NSI is based on the opinions and social norms of the group. The norms of the group regulate the behaviour of the group and it is believed that people conform to these norms in order to not feel foolish.
What are the two key studies for explanations of conformity?
- Asch
- Zimbardo
How did Zimbardo obtain his sample?
- Posted an advert in the university news paper.
- Tested volunteers to test their mental competence.
- Offered money for people to participate.
What is an nAffiliator?
An individual with a need for affiliation with others.
What did Asch’s sample consist of?
- American undergraduate students.
What are the 3 Asch variations?
- Group size.
- Unanimity
- Task difficulty
What is the optimum group size for conformity, as suggested by Asch (1955)?
- 3-9 people.
What effect did increasing the task difficulty have on conformity?
- Increased task difficulty increases the level of conformity.
What did Zimbardo find about social roles following the Stanford prison experiment?
- All members conformed to their social roles, irrespective of background.
