Social Influence- Resistance Flashcards
(10 cards)
Resistance to social influence explanations
Social support
Locus of control
Social support
The presence of allies who resist social influence makes people more likely to also resist social influence
Social support and conformity
Asch (1956) found in one of his variations that the presence of allies decreased conformity to 5% and 9%
Social support and obedience
Milgram’s variation on presence of allies also obeying increased obedience to 92.5%, and allies disobeying decreased obedience to 10%
Evaluation of social support
Allen and Levine- found a confederate not conforming reduced conformity levels, even though he was an unreliable ally (wore glasses).
Rees and Wallace- found social support by friends can help adolescents resist conformity as pressures to drink are lower when 1-2 friends don’t drink.
Rosentrasse protests- 1943 a group of German women protested to have their husbands and children released. Milgram said this was evidence of a platform to resist social influence.
Rotter (1966)
Devised a questionaire which measures Locus of Control (internal and external)
Locus of control
Dispositional explanation
Refers to who/what you think is in control of your life
Internal LoC
Believes the control of life is within each person, more free will.
High internal LoCs are more likely to resist social influence
External LoC
Believes the control of lives is somewhere else- fate, destiny etc.
These are less likely to resist social influence.
Which situational explanation links to external LoC
Agentic state- they both do not take responsibility for their actions and like to blame others.
