Drawing attention for social change
Minority must make the majority aware of the issue.
Via publicity stunt or campaign to force the majority to consider their view.
Cognitive conflict for social change
Minorities create a cognitive conflict between what the majority believes and what the minority believes.
Can make the majority think more deeply about an issue.
Consistency in social change
Evidence has shown that when the minority is more consistent in their position, they are more successful in their influence.
Augmentation principle in social change
Idea that if the minority is willing to suffer and sacrifice for their views, they are seen as more committed and are more likely to be taken seriously.
Snowball effect in social change
The minority’s message spreads exponentially- the minority view reaches a ‘tipping point’ where it then becomes a majority view.
Social cryptoamnesia in social change
The minority opinion becomes law because it is so dominant in society.
People forget where the new majority position has originated from.
