Social Justice Principles Flashcards
(7 cards)
Identify the three social justice principles
Diversity, access and equity, supportive environments.
Explain the access and equity principle
Any cultural, social or financial barriers that exist for a group should be overcome so that this group can have equal access to health services, information and education, a fair allocation of resources without discrimination so that all people can have an increased opportunity for good health.
What are the strategies to apply the access and equity principle to questions?
Allocating resources, eg people on disability pensions receive free or subsidised health care
Explain the diversity principle
Refers to the differences that exist between individuals and people groups. Australia is a very diverse multicultural country, which requires a number of measures to be in place to ensure each people group within our diversity has access to health care and achieves good health outcomes.
What are the strategies to apply the diversity principle to questions?
Providing brochures in multiple languages
Having interpreters in hospitals
Recognising everyone as unique and individual when it comes to health care treatment plans (not one size fits all)
Explain the supportive environments principle
environments where “people live, work and play that protect people from threats to health and that increase their ability to make health-promoting choices.”
The government looks to create supportive environments for all people, but also looks at the environments of particular people groups to determine if these might be reasons for poorer health outcomes.
