topic sentence
In Australia, social media has become an important platform for political participation, but it has both positive and negative effects.
positive 1
One positive is social media has helped to remove bias by providing citizens with a platform to share their opinions and ideas without interference. In the past, traditional media sources were often accused of being biassed towards certain political parties or individuals. This bias could influence the public’s opinion and could limit political participation.
negative 1
However social media can lead to disengagement from traditional political institutions, such as political parties and elected representatives.
Instead of participating in these institutions, people may choose to express their political views and preferences solely through social media, which can limit their ability to influence decision-making and policy outcomes.
example 1
An example of this is the Labour Party as discussed in a particular article. Labour is the only party to put up advertisements on huge social media platforms such as: snapchat and tiktok. Resulting in labour winning more votes due to the fact that the younger generation is only seeing information about parties like labour the more traditional ones are losing votes. Though it also means that compared to the past this new generation will be able to access information through a clear lens and can freely discuss their ideas and opinions.

Furthermore, social media has also played a crucial role in mobilising young people to participate in political activities, such as protests and rallies.
positive 2
An example being the ‘School Strike 4 Climate’ movement, which was initiated by a 16-year-old girl from Sweden (Greta Thumberg) and spread through social media, mobilising thousands of young people across Australia to demand action on climate change (which is a issue that our ancestors have created nearly 260 years ago).
negative 2
However, in 2021 due to covid there were many “freedom rallies’’ that attempted to help melburnians regain their old life again before covid. This mentality (that the governement was imprisoning them and lying) from many was due to the fact that the media can also lead to the spread of misinformation and fake news, which can mislead people and distort public debates.
