-Buying & selling of products & services made lots of money
-Guilds set up by rich merchants maintained control of economy
-Bankers practiced usury
-Church was initially opposed to encouraging investment but later allowed interest over loans that involved risks
Black Death Effects
-Italy went into depression (death of milions)
-People questioned faith & were more critical to church
-Believed with help of church they could reach heaven after death (religion was essential)
-Caused growth of culture in Italy
-After 1500’s economic slump was over and merchants & bankers grew in wealth cause of trade & commerce
Advantages of Trade
-Financially beneficial
-Lower prices on goods, easier access to markets for own products & goods, no need to pay for ship services cause of access to trade routes
Silk Road
-Network of trade routes
-Mainly silk & spice traded (social status symbol)
-Spread disease, culture, & ideas (philosophy, religion, economics, politics)
Cause & Effect
Contact with east in crusades = increased materialism & desire for luxury goods
Growth of merchant class = increased wealth & power for merchants
Areas were rich with resources that could be sold = communities added foreign good in local production
Church Community
-Hierarchy (church was very wealthy)
-Congregation had responsibility to obey church rules, respect priests, pay tithe
-Money from community to build beautiful churches (hard labor done by serfs & peasants)
-Wealthy citizens spent money to beautify city’s
Polos
-Family that traveled entire Silk Road
-Marco Polo traveled through Asia with father & uncle & became famous for account of his travels
