New England
(In the north), too cold for farming, makes their money by fish trading, whaling, shipbuilding, looking for religious freedom

(the breadbasket colonies) warm, growing small grains (for bread) on farms, some trade (in NY especially), most diverse region (lots of different groups of people: dutch, swedish, quaker’s, puritans, german
Southern
hot and humid, good for large farms (called plantations), slaves worked on these large farms- growing cash crops like rice, cotton, indigo, and tobacco$$$
Jamestown
the first colony (virginia in the south) founded in 1607. looking for gold but they didn’t find any so they grow tobacco. government is called house of burgesses (a meeting to decided on laws) first winter was called the starving time due to disease and lack of food.
plymouth
the 2nd colony which was founded in 1620 in massachusetts (new england) . looking for religious freedom called puritans, signed thr mayflower compact, a document saying they would follow all laws and work together for everyone’s good.
maryland
founded a safe haven for catholics to practice their type of religion
rhode island
founded for truer religious freedom by roger Williams who thought puritans in massachusetts were too strict, Anne hutchison goes to rhode island for religious freedom.
pennsylvania
founded by William pen and the quakers (a religious group) for religious freedom and toleration (allowing all religions in your colony) kind to native Americans and focused on equality
