What was Marbury vs. Madison
It was the first time that federal courts had the power to overturn and act of Congress the grounds that it violated the US Constitution

William Marbury, James Madison, and John Marshall, with President Thomas Jefferson and President John Adams
what were Jefferson´s policies as president
- Wanted to limit the power of the government
- Republicans controlled Congress-( They let the Alien and Seditions Acts expire)
- Jefferson and Congress cut military spending with the hopes of paying off the National Debt.
- He believed the jobs of the federal government were to protect the country from foreign threats, deliver the mail, and collect customs duties.
- Jefferson did keep the National Bank
what were some issues with Great Britain and France
- Britain and France were at war and each wanted to stop American ships from supplying the other side.
- Britain began stopping and searching American ships and forced sailors to serve in their navy (impressment).
What were some issues with the Barbary Pirates
pirates from the Barbary states of North Africa. They would steal cargo and hold crews for ransom.
what were some disputes with the Native Americans
Tecumseh, a Shawnee chief, was angry that Native Americans were getting pushed off of their land.
He wanted to unite Native Americans of the northwestern frontier, the South, and the Mississippi River Valley.
He was helped by his brother, the Prophet.
They founded a village near the Wabash and Tippecanoe rivers.
What were some issues with Spain
Spain controlled New Orleans and the territory of Louisiana- the region that stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.
Spain found it difficult to keep Americans out of the territory.
In 1802, Spain handed the Louisiana territory over to France, but shut down the river to American shipping.
