define culture
Shared norms, values, beliefs and behaviours. It provides guidelines of how people should think and act.
define norms
expected patterns of behaviour which society deems acceptable
define values
shared beliefs about what is good, right and desirable in society.
define subculture
a group within a main culture that has distinctive norms and values. e.g. indie
define high culture
subcultures associated with the elite social class. e.g. opera, live theatre
define popular culture
cultural patterns which are widespread amongst the population. e.g. cinema, fashion trends
define global culture
cultural products and activities which are universal. e.g McDonalds
define consumer culture
culture where social status is defined by consumption and assets.

define cultural diversity
a variety of cultural groups within society
define cultural hybridity
mixing of different cultural elements. e.g. foods
define socialisation
the lifelong process where individuals learn norms, values and behaviours which are acceptable in their culture.

the first stage of socialisation
