Lower class individuals feel they do not have the same opportunities as others (higher class), and may resort to crimes to achieve these.
Merton’s Strain Theory
Suggests that crime and deviance are inevitable and are beneficial for society / crime holds a function
Functionalism
Following the ideas of Karl Marx. Society is split into two distinct parts representing upper classes and lowr classes. People with this way of thinking believe that the only way to solve crime is by establishing a socialist society.
Marxism
What are the two sections of society believed in by Marxists
Proleteriat (lower) and bourgeoisie (middle to upper)
