Deviance
The recognized violation of cultural norms.
Social control
Attempts by society to regulate peoples thoughts and behavior.
Three foundations of deviance
1) Varies according to cultural norms.
2) People become deviant as others define them that way.
3) Rule making and rule breaking involve social power.
Durkheim - Affirms cultural values and norms
This helps us to understand what is right or wrong.
Durkheim - Clarifies moral boundaries
Draws a clear line between unacceptable and acceptable.
Durkheim - Brings people together
Can create social unity by uniting people against a common issue or behavior, strengthening community ties through shared reactions.
Labeling theory .
is the idea that deviance and conformity result not so much from what people do, but from how others respond to those actions.
Primary Deviance
Primary deviance refers to minor, passing episodes of deviance.
These actions provoke slight reaction from others and do not affect the individual’s self-concept.
Secondary deviance
Occurs when a person begins to take on a deviant identity in response to society’s reaction.
Stigma
stigma is a powerfully negative label that greatly changes a person’s self-concept and social identity.
Retrospective Labeling
Involves reinterpreting someone’s past behavior based on a current deviant label.
Example: After a person is arrested, others might say “he was always a troublemaker.”
Projective Labeling
Projective Labeling
Involves using a person’s deviant identity to predict future actions.
