(4 cards)

Q
Socrates
A
- 5th century, Athens
- the paradigm of a philosopher: przyznawał, że nie wie, konfrontował ekspertów - publiczne upokorzenie
- oskarżony o nieuwielbienie bóstw i psucie młodzieży, skazany na śmierć
- the paradigm of philisophical life and death - by być filozofem, trzeba żyć i umierać jak Sokrates (umrzeć za istotną dla siebie ideę)

Q
Socratic elenchus: Irwin
A
- request to be told what some virtue is or a question about a virtue
- The way of proving that what you think is an absurd or it’s a paradox.
- It’s about asking questions – one by one; by questioning the initial positions Socrates comes to the very opposite position – which shows that the former one was paradoxical.
- The difference is that Socrates starts with a position of a laic – he doesn’t know anything, and the other person starts with a position of a specialist and after Socrates’ questioning they seem stupid.
- a person (interlocutor) finds themselves at a loss (aporein) about what to believe
3
Q
Socrates’ question: Williams, 1985 - How should one live?
A
- generality - it can be relevant to anyone
- anybody’s question - it asks for conditions of a good life
- lack of immediacy - it is not about what I should do now but in general, it is always relevant
- noncomital
- reflective character - a timeless question, invites to think about life from non-particular point of viw
4
Q
Socrates: the unexamined life is not worth living
A
- niby powiedział to podczas rozprawy
- to be separated from elenchus by exile was a fate worse than death - it is better to continue his work in the after-life than to not be able to seek the truth on earth
