Q

Socratic elenchus: Irwin

A
  • request to be told what some virtue is or a question about a virtue
  • The way of proving that what you think is an absurd or it’s a paradox.
  • It’s about asking questions – one by one; by questioning the initial positions Socrates comes to the very opposite position – which shows that the former one was paradoxical.
  • The difference is that Socrates starts with a position of a laic – he doesn’t know anything, and the other person starts with a position of a specialist and after Socrates’ questioning they seem stupid.
  • a person (interlocutor) finds themselves at a loss (aporein) about what to believe

  • lack of immediacy - it is not about what I should do now but in general, it is always relevant
  • noncomital
  • reflective character - a timeless question, invites to think about life from non-particular point of viw
