Q

What happens during the acute inflammatory phase of soft tissue healing?

A

Vasoconstriction in the 1st 5 minutes, followed by vasodilation in the next 5-60 minutes
Platelets block closed blood vessells
Coagulation cascade results in clot formation’
Chemical and cellular events occur
Mast cells release: HEPARIN (thins blood - prolongs clotting), HISTAMINE (promotes further vasodilation), BRADYKININ (opens blood vessel walls - creates pain and brusing)
Lasts for 0-6 days

Q

Describe the Proliferation Phase of tissue healing (Phase 2)

A

Debris is removed by phagocytosis
Angiogenesis occurs and new blood vessells are formed
Fibroplasia occurs - immature type 1 and 2 collagen is laid down
Lasts 3 to 21 days

Q

Describe what occurs in stage 3 of soft tissue healing? (Maturation)

A
  • fibrous, inelastic scar tissue forms
  • collagen remodelling occurs increasing the tensile strength of the scars
  • treatment should include rehabilitation exercise, passive ROM, heat

Q

Why is early mobilization important for the maturation phase of soft tissue healing?

A

Early mobilization ensures that the collagen fibers are laid down in proper form. This is why gradual movement is essential post-surgery

Q

What happens during the 3 distinct processes seen in the proliferation phase of soft tissue healing?

A

Phagocytosis - debris is removed
Angiogenesis - new blood vessels are formed
Fibroplasia - new, immature type 1 and type 2 collagen are laid down (“immature mass of connective tissue”)

A GENERATION OF NEW EPITHELIAL CELLS ARE LAID DOWN AS A RESULT OF THESE PROCESSES
