solar system Flashcards
(6 cards)
what is the life cycle for a star the size of the sun?
- clouds of dust and gas form a nebula
- form of gravity pulls it together to form a protostar
- enters stable period where outward pressure and force of gravity is balanced
- eventually runs out becomes a red giant as fusion occurs
- it becomes unstable and ejects layer of dust and gas (white dwarf)
- when the white dwarf cools down it becomes a black dwarf
what is the life cycle of a star bigger than the sun?
clouds of dust and gas form a nebula
• form of gravity pulls it together to form a protostar
• enters stable period where outward pressure and force of gravity is balanced
• eventually it runs out and it turns into a red super giant
• it undergoes more fusion and expands and forms supernova
• exploding supernova throws outer layer of dust and gas leaving dense neutron star
what is the link between speed and orbit?
the closer you are to a planet the stronger the gravitational force so faster orbiting
what is red shift?
when we look at light from distant galaxies it appears red as it has shifted towards red end of spectrum suggests it’s moving away
what is an artificial satellite?
places into orbit by man
what is a satellite?
anything that orbits a celestial body
