Solubility (8) ✅ Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is a saturated solution?
A solution in which no more solid will dissolve in water at a particular temperature
What is solubility
The mass of solute that can saturate 100 grams of water at a particular temperature
What is mass measured in
Grams
What is volume measured in
Cubic centimetres (cm3)
What is the density of water
1g /cm3
whats a solvent
liquid in which a solute dissolves
what’s a solute
substance that dissolves in a
substance that dissolves in a solvent
what’s a solution
solute dissolved in a solvent
What happens to the solubility of a gas as the temperature increases?
The solubility of a gas decreases
when water boils, why are bubbles formed
the air would be less soluble
when a soft drink is heated it starts to fix, why
gas/Co2 is less soluble at higher temp therefore is removed from a drink
why is carbon dioxide added to drinks at a lower temp
it’s more soluble at low temps therefore more fizz in drinks
what happens to solubility of a solid as temperature increases
the solubility of a solid increases
what is solubility defined as
the mass of a solid required to saturate 100g of water at a particular temperature
how do we calculate solubility
solubility = mass of solute/mass of water X 100
PPQ ON SOLUBILITY CURVE
what is the method to determine the solubility of solid potassium chlorate
- place substance in boiling tube
- add deiosed water and place thermometer in
- heat in water bath until all dissolves and stir
- remove boiling tube and cool
- record temp that crystals form at
- add more deionised water and repeat until total volume added is 20cm3
