Q

Acids

A
  • conduct current, ph less than 7, corrosive, reacts with metals to produce hydrogen gas, tastes sour, neutralized by bases

Bases

A
  • conducts current, corrosive, ph more than 7, feels slippery, tastes bitter, neatralized by acids

Q

2 types of deposition

A
  1. Wet emissions that contact water up the atmosphere and then hit the ground as rain or snow
  2. Dry: gasses and particles absorbed by the earth; deposited on any surface then come in contact with water

Most deposition in Alberta is dry deposition

  • Alberta soil is slightly basic due to the carbonate caused by erosion of limestone

Q

Buffers

A
  • a buffer is used to resist the Ph change to soil or lake water
  • the buffering capacity is the ability of a substance to resist Ph change when a strong base or acid is added to it

Q

pH and plants

A
  • plants absorb nutrients into the roots from the soil, up to the leaves
  • acid deposition changes nutrients so they are insoluble, plants can’t use them

Q

Leaching

A
  • acids in soil makes metal ions available to plants
  • plants tackle those nutrients into their roots when the dissolve in the soil or water and this is called leaching

Q

Acid deposition

A
  • decreased root growth (biotic)
  • prevents absorption of calcium (abiotic)
  • reduce decomposing soil bacteria (biotic)
  • lowering pH of water ( abiotic)
  • corrosion of metals (abiotic)
  • mercury causes damage to gills (abiotic affecting biotic)
  • destroying waxy coatings on plants (biotic)
  • methyl mercury traps tissues (abiotic affecting biotic)

Q

Biomagnoification

A
  • a pollutant increases in concentration as it goes up the food chain, example being there will be more mercury in a polar bear than seal because the polar bear eats a lot of seal.
