Solutions Flashcards
(26 cards)
Suspension
A heterogenous mixture. Particles are larger than molecules and ions. Particles settle and can be separated by filtration and scatter light in all directions
Solution
A homogeneous mixture
Solvent
Found in greater amount in a mixture. Dissolves the solute
Solute
Found in smaller amount in mixture. Dissolves in solvent
Colloid
Particles are intermediate in size between those of suspensions and true solutions. Particles do. It settle and cannot be separated by filtration. Exhibit Tyndall effect
Concentration
More solute compared to solvent
Molarity
Moles per liter.
Solubility
The ability of a solution to dissolve in water
Miscible
Liquid solutes and solvents that are able to dissolve freely in one another
Immiscible
Liquid solutes and solvent that are soluble in each other
Dissociation
Separation of ions that occurs when an ionic compound dissolves
Hydration
Water in added to an unsaturated solution
Saturated solution
The solvent holds the most solute it can
Unsaturated solution
The solvent can hold more solute
Supersaturated solution
The solvent holds more solute than it can under normal conditions
Solubility equilibrium
Dynamic equilibrium when a chemical compound in the solid state is in chemical equilibrium with a solution of that compound
Henry’s Law
At a constant temperature, the amount of a given gas that dissolves in a given type and volume of liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas in equilibrium with that liquid.
Conductivity
The ability of a solution to conduct electricity
Electrolyte
Dissolves in water to form a solution that can conduct an electric current
Nonelectrolyte
Dissolves in water to form a solution that does not conduct current
Hydronium ion
An ion that exists in the universe
Colligative property
Properties of solutions that depend on the ratio of the number of solute particles to the number of solvent particles
Surfactant
When added to liquid, reduces surface tension to increase into spreading and wetting properties
Detergent
Dissolves in water and emulsifies with other objects
