Solutions Flashcards
(20 cards)
Suspension
A dispersion of large particles that are temporarily suspended and settle naturally overtime
Colloid
Consists of 2 phases of matter and are heterogeneous only ona microscopic level
Solute
The substance that is being dissolved
Solvent
The substance that does the dissolving
Distillation
Separation for liquids based on their boiling points
Centrifuge
Rapidly spins and separates by density
Decant
Poor the liquid off the solid
Filtration
Use of a filter paper so large particles get trapped and small particles can pass through
Soluble
When a solid/gas does dissolve in liquid
Insoluble
When a solid/gas does not dissolve in liquid
Miscible
2 liquids that dissolve in one another
Immiscible
2 liquids that can not dissolve in one another
Solvation
The surrounding of solute particles by solvent particles
Dilute
Contains a low ratio of solute to solvent
Concentration
A measure of the amount of solute that is dissolved in a given amount of solvent
Molarity
The number of moles of solute dissolved per liter (L) of solution
Unsaturated solution
Contains less solute than a given amount of solvent can dissolve
Saturated solution
Contains the maximum amount of solute for a given amount of solvent at a certain temp
Supersaturated solution
Contains more then the maximum solute that a given amount of solvent can dissolve
Solution
A liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent).
