Somatic Cell Division Flashcards
(6 cards)
Define Somatic Cell Division
For eukaryotic cell to reproduce itself it must duplicate its DNA and distribute that DNA to the resulting daughter cells.
Mitosis
a type of cell division by which a diploid somatic cell duplicates its DNA and divides once to produce two genetically identical diploid daughter cells in order to reproduce themselves
Diploid (2N) cell
two complete sets of homologous chromosomes, which have the same size, shape, and carry genes for the same traits
how many diploid (2N) cells do humans have
46
How many pairs of homologous chromosomes do human somatic cells contain
23
What is the purpose of Mitosis
This cell division is used for tissue growth and repair by mult-icellular organisms
