Somatic Nervous System (7/7) Flashcards
(8 cards)
Somatic Nervous System
single neuron efferent system that controls skeletal muscle
What do interneurons in spinal cord do?
interpret stimuli, fire somatic neurons (in ventral horn of spinal cord)
Motor unit
single motor neuron and all muscle cell it controls (between 3 and 1000)
What does the axon of somatic motor neuron do in neuromuscular junction?
contacts plasma membrane of skeletal muscle cell
What does the action potential of neuromuscular junction do?
travels down axon and opens voltage-gated calcium channels
What happens when calcium enters axon terminal?
it triggers release of acetylcholine
Motor end plate
part of muscle cell membrane that receives signal with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (Na channels)
What happens when Na channels open?
sodium rushes into cell and causes graded potential
