A

-he retreated to Hampton Court with Edward on the 5th October
-he moved to Winsor castle on the 6th October
-Edward fell ill and claimed he was a prisoner->he abandoned Somerset and stated that he threatened riots if he was removed from power
-Somerset denied this->couldn’t contradict the King so was removed and arrested

How did Warwick gain power and use it to increase Somerset power again?

A

-Warwick removed opponents so that he had a Protestant majority on the council by January 1550->leading to Catholic members being dismissed -Warwick placed supporters in important positions which further secured his position as Lord President of the council
-Warwick attempted a reconciliation with Somerset once he was secure-> Somerset was released from Jail with his goods restored->his daughter married Northumberland’s son and he was restored to the Privy Council

What were the grievances?

A

-poor leadership->he had alienated many people through his high-handed management->he was reluctant to delegate often by-assed the council and ruled from ‘the Protector’s palace’

-mishandling of foreign policy->a failed campaign in Scotland and the declaration of war by France (August 1549) disappointed the council

-favouritism->Somerset packed key positions with his own men so he could easily control the King

-money making and extravagance ->he built lavishly was able to accumulate fees, salaries, offices and lands->he added £5,000 to an already generous income

-religious policy->many of the council opposed his religious reforms

-social policy->he alienated the aristocracy as seen in the different rebellions in 1549

A

-they were allies at the start of Somerset’s rise to power
-Paget helped advise Somerset when making decisions but Somerset started changing too many things
-Paget turned on Somerset and made up an anti-Somerset faction with Warwick and Wriothesley (2 protestants 1 catholic)->even people on Somerset’s side originally, turned on him
