Ambient sound

The sounds of the location in the background.

Asynchronous sound

Sound either out of sync with the visuals or unrelated to the visuals.

Contrapuntal sound

Sound or music that seems strange in comparison to the scene we are seeing.

Dialogue

The words and lines the characters say.

Direct address (Breaking the Fourth Wall)

When the character talks to the audience directly.

Diegetic sound

Sound that the characters can hear in the scene

Non-Diegetic sound

Sound that the characters cannot hear, e.g the score or a voiceover.

Pitch

The height or depth of the sound being heard.

Rhythm

The beat of the music, speed.

Voiceover

Non-diegetic dialogue that a character delivers.

Sound Bridge

A portion of sound that covers a cut, normally to link two scenes together

Sound motif

A sound which normally represents a certain character

Sound effects

A sound accompanying an action, sometimes musical.

Soundtrack

Music from a soundtrack or score that emphasises the themes and emotions of a scene or character.

Synchronous sound

Sound that is in sync with the visuals and was filmed at the same time.
