Through tectonic movement. It is believed that the Indian subcontinent used to be separate from all other land.

They formed through the merging of the Indian Subcontinent and the Eurasian Plate. The land at the very top of the Himalayan Mountains was partially sea coast. There is sedimentary rock and even sea shells up there.

The Indian Ocean is the ocean below India. It is a very large warm water reservoir.
