The city became so populated in the 1940s a shanty town popped up around the stream and began polluting it
In the 1970s it was concreted over and a highway was built on top
In 2003 a project began to restore the riger
Why were people originally against restoring the river and why did they change their mind
The highway was very important and carried over 160000 cars per day - vital to the cities transport and economy
The project improved transport- bus rapid transit service ran along a smaller road next to the river , an underground subway was built , walking was possible and enjoyable because of the new walkways along the river bank
