Ex: European common market (same currency)

Pos-products aren’t as expensive
Neg-cheap labor in Mexico and US products are more expensive because certain regulations
Belief that all international relations are based on power and that nations seek advantage over each other

Belief that American values of democracy, free market, free speech and equality are universal values that should be upheld around the globe

Belief that nations should avoid involvement in international conflicts (favored by President G. Bush)

Belief that in the value of cooperation among nations (after 9/11)

Monroe Doctrine
Any attempt by European power to extend influence over the Western Hemisphere will viewed as a danger to national security of the United States
Roosevelt Corollary (addition to Monroe Doctrine)
US will militarily intervene any chronic wrongdoing towards smaller Western Hemisphere countries
Truman Doctrine
US will help any country striving for a democracy (trying to break away from communism)
Eisenhower Doctrine
Preservation of Middle Eat is vital (oil) to American national security
Carter Doctrine
Threats to the Persian Gulf represent threats to American’s vital interests (location of world’s 70% of oil)
Reagan Doctrine
US will fight communism in Central and South America and the Caribbean (sends money and troops to Contras in Iran)
