Arousal
The state of alertness and readiness of an individual to perform varying on a continuum of deep sleep to exteme excitement.
Anxiety
A negative emotional state caused because a situation is threatening usually arising in sport as a result of the performers perception of the situation.
Trait anxiety
A genetically inherited and stable trait which measures the potential to react with apprehesion.
State anxiety
Anxiety felt in a particular situation or time made of cognitive and somatic anxiety linked to mood and alters moment to moment.

Stress
A pattern of negative physiological states and psychological responses occurring in situations where people perceive threats to their well-being.
Eustress
A positive stress that gives a feeling of fulfilment and arousal increasing focus, attention and skill level.
Distress
A negative stress that in extreme cases causes anxiety and apprehension tending to be detrimental to sporting performance.
Achievement motivation
An individuals drive to achieve success for its own sake.
Visualisation - Cognitive
A process by which a mental image is created of what you want to happen in order to build confidence.
Positive self talk - Cognitive
Developing positive thoughts about ones actions in order to replace negative ones. Experienced performers may use trigger words to cue positive thought.
Goal setting - Cognitive
The identification of what the performer is trying to achieve at a time in the future in order to provide a focus distracting from anxious thoughts.
PMR - Somatic
Progressive muscular relaxation. Contract/relax muscle groups in turn to increase awareness of tension and remove it through relaxation.
Centring - Somatic
Using deep breathing as a way to refocus attention and concentration providing more oxygen to the brain.
