  1. Interdependence
    a. Reliant on each other e.g. GK relies on GD for pressure on the GS and GA
  2. Interaction
    a. Structured patterns of communication e.g. shouting to fellow players in lacrosse got left, got right, got ball etc.
  3. Identical Goals
    a. Common goals e.g. getting into championship division at nationals
  4. Identity
    a. Creating a group collective identity e.g. by wearing a club vest
  5. Interpersonal relationship
    a. The relationship between members of the group and with the coach
  6. Independence
    a. The ability to make a decision by yourself e.g. whether to shoot or pass

Describe co-ordination losses

A

occurs when individuals work less hard in the group situation than when working alone.

Breakdowns in teamwork can happen due to positional errors or poorly timed moves

e.g. GS coming up to the line to receive the ball but has no one to pass to next.

  • Length of time the team have been together

A

They experience loss of motivation in a group and hide in the games, failing to achieve their potential

  • Lack of accountability as the performer is not clear about their role and its value within the team
  • Performance not recognised/valued by the coach
  • Perception that the team members are not pulling their weight
  • Perceived/actual low ability leading to avoidance behaviour as task is seen to be too hard
  • Lack of self-confidence which causes avoidance behaviour to protect self-esteem

Give 5 strategies to reduce social loafing

A
  1. Individual player stats e.g. goals scored as this means the player feels appreciated and evaluated
  2. To give regular individual feedback and make sure the individual understands the importance of their contribution
  3. Set individual targets as this gives the player something specific to focus on
  4. To ensure fitness levels are high so players don’t need to take a rest or are incapable of chasing the ball
  5. Select team players who from past experience are less likely to socially loaf
  6. Punish social loafers by dropping them from the team/only playing them for a short period of time
  7. Give responsibility to those who social loaf
  8. Highlight assists e.g. if one player passes and other one scored then praise both players
  9. Organise socialising activities so you become friends with the team and you don’t want to let them down

A
