It began when Cartagena was a trading post on the coast
Then there was a roman conquest
Then development stopped
Moorish conquest developed the irrigation systems that murcia still uses and depends on today
1243 they were taken over my Castile but they have sense earned back their freedom and became and autonomous city in 1982
