Specialised Cells Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is the function of red blood cells?
Carries oxygen around the body.
Features: Bi-concave shape increases surface area to carry more oxygen.
What is the function of root hair cells?
Absorbs water and minerals from the soil.
Features: Long cytoplasmic extension increases surface area for absorption.
What is the function of palisade leaf cells?
Contain organelles that trap sunlight for photosynthesis.
Features: Have chloroplasts and a large vacuole filled with cell sap.
What is the function of muscle cells?
Contract to bring about movement.
Features: Elongated with protein fibers so they can contract and shorten.
What is the function of nerve cells?
Carries electrical messages around the body.
Features: Long, thin, wire-like structures; part of the communication systems of your body.
What is the effect of increased surface area on processes?
Increased surface area results in an increased rate (speed) of the process that utilizes that surface.
