A

interact with molecular vibrations in a material and are scattered
are little packets of energy

Q

Types of scattering

A
  1. elastic - leave in the same state as they entered (Rayleigh 10^7)
  2. inelastic - leaves the molecule in a different quantum state (Raman 1)

Q

types of raman

A
  1. stokes - photon/ light comes in, loses energy to molecule
  2. anti stokes - light comes in and takes energy from molecule

Q

Raman vs IR

A

light scattering / IR absorption
change in polarisability / change in absorption
aqueous sample / non aqueous
little to no sample prep / sample prep
