What is collaboration?
A style for direct interaction between at least two co-equal parties voluntarily engaged in shared decision making as they work toward a common goal.
What are community schools?
Public schools that provide services and support that fit each neighborhood’s needs, created and run by the people who know our children best, all working together.
What are the six pillars of community schools?

What is special education?
Specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability.

What is inclusive education?
Recognizes that all students are capable learners who benefit from a meaningful, challenging and appropriate curriculum delivered within the general education classroom and from universally designed evidence-based, culturally responsive and differentiated instruction practices addressing diverse needs, strengths, challenges, and experiences.
What is inclusion?
- Students with disabilities attending the same school as siblings and neighbors 2. Students with disabilities being in general education classes with same-aged peers 3. Students with disabilities having individualized and relevant learning objectives 4. Students with disabilities being provided with the necessary supports to participate in learning activities and school routines with their classmates.
What inclusion is NOT?
- Requiring all students with any disability to spend every minute of the school day in general education 2. Never receiving small group or individualized instruction 3. Being in general education to learn the core curriculum only 4. Being left to ‘sink or swim’ when outside of special education environments.
What is Tier 1?
Green, 80-85% of students, universal and schoolwide practices. Examples: peer tutoring and cooperative teaching.
What is Tier 2?
Yellow, 10-15% of students, research-validated or group supports and interventions. Examples: accommodations and support buddy system.
What is Tier 3?
Red, 5-10% of students, research-validated individualized supports and interventions. Example: curriculum modifications, individualized positive behavior interventions and supports.
What does BEAR stand for?
Behavior, Effect, Alternative, Result.
What is the rationale for co-teaching?
The primary rationale for co-teaching is to help meet the needs of students with diverse learning disabilities.
What are effective co-teaching examples?
1) Designing teaching roles to reflect the expertise and interests of both teachers 2) Preserving regular time periods to plan together 3) Expanding teacher roles and skills to enhance student outcomes 4) Assessing and considering both the student and teacher outcome of collaborative partnerships and exploring improvements 5) Communicating and resolving conflicts together 6) Using some process that helps teachers cooperatively.
How to deal with angry parents?

What is Team Teaching?

A co-teaching model where teachers divide content and students into groups. The teachers may be present and lead certain content.
What is Alternative co-teaching?
A co-teaching strategy where one teacher instructs a large group of students while another teacher works with a smaller group.
What is Parallel co-teaching?
A co-teaching strategy where two teachers split a class in half and teach the same material at the same time.
