Q

What does a double-ended arrow above a speed restriction sign mean?

A

This can be found at a diverging junction to indicate that the line speed for both routes is the same.

Q

What does this sign mean?

A

This is a warning indicator. It is placed on the approach to certain speed indicators and gives a warning of a reduction in permissible speed ahead. An AWS magnet may be provided 183m before the warning indicator, and the warning indicator will be placed service brake distance from the speed reduction.

6
Q

When will an AWS magnet/warning board be provided for a reduction in permissible speed?

7
Q

What does a sign with two speeds displayed mean?

A

This is a differential permissible speed indicator. The bottom speed applies to passenger trains, postal trains and light locomotives, and the top speed applies to all other trains.

Q

What does a permissible speed indicator with letters sign mean?

A

The permissible speed applies only to the type of train shown by the letters:

HST- High speed trains.
MU- Multiple-unit trains.
DMU- Diesel multiple-unit trains.
EMU- Electric multiple-unit trains.
SP- Sprinter multiple-unit trains.
CS- Class 67 locomotives.

Q

What does a permissible speed indicator with two speeds and letters mean?

A

The higher permissible speed applies only to the trains shown by the letters, whilst the lower permissible speed applies to all other trains.

Q

What does this sign mean?

A

This is a warning board placed on the approach to a speed restriction ahead. An AWS magnet will be provided 183m before the warning board (unless in an AWS gap area).

13
Q

What does this sign mean?

A

This is a termination indicator. It indicates the end of a speed restriction and requires the whole train to pass the sign before accelerating back to permissible speed.

Q

What does this signal mean?

A

This is an emergency indicator, which is used to warn the driver of an emergency speed restriction using constantly flashing white lights. An AWS magnet will be provided at the site of an emergency indicator (unless in an AWS gap area).

15
Q

How far away will a warning board be placed from a speed indicator?

A

Service brake distance.

16
Q

What risks are associated with speed restrictions?

A
  1. Drivers may focus too much on reducing their speed, increasing their risk of missing other dangers such as signals.
  2. If a speed restriction terminates prior to a station stop, the driver may focus too much on accelerating back up to line speed and pass the station.
  3. If there is a station within the speed restriction section, the driver may forget and accelerate too fast when leaving the station.
17
Q

What does this sign mean?

A

This is a repeating warning board. It is placed at the end of a station platform, connection from a siding or dead-end platform to remind the driver there is a temporary speed restriction ahead (portable AWS magnet will not be provided). A repeating warning board will not be provided if the speed restriction commences less than 300m ahead.

18
Q

What does SPATE mean?

A

Speed Previously Advised Teminated Early. This is when a speed restriction has been withdrawn or will not be imposed.

19
Q

What does this sign mean?

A

This is a SPATE indicator. This sign is positioned at the entry of a speed restriction that has been advised in the W.O.N. but has been withdrawn or will not be imposed.

20
Q

If the permissible line speed increases, when can you accelerate to the new line speed?

A

Only once the entire train has passed the speed indicator board.

21
Q

If the permissible line speed decreases, at what point should you reach the new line speed?

A

You need to have decelerated to the lower line speed by the time the front of your train has reached the speed indicator board.

22
Q

What does this sign mean?

A

This is an acceleration board. It is sometimes used in place of a termination indicator and allows trains to accelerate to line speed once the front of their train reaches the board.

23
Q

What does this sign mean?

A

This is an acceleration indicator. It is used to indicate the end of a speed restriction and allows drivers to accelerate back up to line speed once the front of their train reaches the board.

24
What is a risk associated with an acceleration indicator?
If an acceleration indicator is positioned before a station, the driver may focus too much on accelerating back to line speed and forget to stop at the station platform.
25
When would an emergency speed restriction be imposed vs a temporary speed restriction?
Speed lower than advised in W.O.N. Overrun. Restrictive (distance). Not yet advised in the W.O.N. SPATED and reinstated.
26
What should you do if you notice missing, defective or misplaced speed restriction equipment, or if it is becoming difficult to see?
Tell the signaller immediately if it is a: • Emergency indicator. • Warning board. • Repeating warning board. • Speed indicator. Tell the signaller at the first opportunity if it is a termination or acceleration indicator, or if one of the above pieces of equipment is becoming difficult to see.
27
What is the risk associated with speed restrictions and signals?
If a speed restriction warning board is placed at a signal, the AWS magnet will be disconnected instead of providing a portable magnet, meaning the driver will always receive a warning horn. If the signal is displaying a green aspect, it may lead the driver to believe a right side failure has occurred. If the signal is yellow or red, there is a risk that the driver may forget about the signal, believing the horn was solely for the warning board.
