Spinal Cord Flashcards
Dorsal horn
contains interneurons and ventral termination of sensory afferent fibers
Ventral horn
Contains interneurons and cell bodies of somatic motor neurons
Spinal cord
8 cervical segments, 13 thoracic, 3 sacral, 5 caudal
Vertebral column
7 cervical segments, 13 thoracic, 3 sacral, up to 20 caudal
Withdrawal reflex
flexes limb, may show crossed-extensor reflex, no signs of pain perception
Pain Response
Withdraws limb, turns head toward stimuli, may attempt to bite/move away, whines or barks distorted respiratory pattern
Pacinian corpuscles
mechanoreceptors found in subcutaneous tissue
Meissner’s corpuscles
specialized rapidly adapting receptors in glabrous skin located superficially within dermal papillae, less sensitive
Merkel cells
slowly adaping touch receptors located in hairy skin of the face, glabrous skin, and gingical mucosa. Located in the tips of finger-like extensions of hte epidermis into the intermediate ridges of the dermis
A-beta fibers
Touch- Cutaneous receptors Fast
A- delta fibers
Touch, temp, and pain- cutaneous receptors. slower
C fibers
Temperature and pain- Slowest
