Social control

A

Active/passive process of a group regulating itself based on society’s norms and values

Sport has its own norms+values. Individuals playing sport must abide by the rules. If they break the rules they will be punished by the referee e.g carded for dissent
Through conditioning+social learning+punishment individuals learn to follow the rule.
This can decrease anti-social behaviour outside of sports as individuals are less likely to break the law as they know they will he punished

The process by which someone learns society’s norms+values

Primary socialisation- learning society’s norms+values through family

Secondary socialisation- learning society’s norms+values through education+religion+government

National identity

A

Defined as a sense of a nation as a cohesive whole and represented by distinctive traditions+cultures+languages

By attending matches together or watching at set venues, this increases cohesion as there is a sense of togetherness/belonging
E.g England fans from around the country together overseas
Playing of national anthem increases national pride
Success brings a feel good factor across the nation
E.g London 2012 olympics was Team GB’s most successful olympics and this brought a feel good factor across the nation
Sport also creates national icons which citizens support together
E.g mo Farah at olympics

Explain the role of media on sport

A

Department of media and culture distribute lottery funding and important in organ
Help to keep sports a high profile
Raise awareness of scandals/ high profile incidents
Also inform spectators about events and keep em up to date abt clubs within sport E.g transfer news
