What is a strain?
A stretching or tearing of a muscle or tissue connecting muscle to bone. tendon
What is a sprain?
A stretching or tearing of ligaments, the fibrous tissue that connects bones and joints.
What is a contusion?
A region of injured tissue or skin in which blood capillaries have been ruptured; a bruise
What is a fracture?
A complete or partial break in a bone
Five different types of fractures
Stable, open, transverse, oblique, comminuted.
What is a ligament?
A short band of tough flexible fibrous connective tissue that connects the two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint. Bone to bone.
What is a tendon?
A flexible but inelastic cord of strong fibrous collagen tissue attaching a muscle to a bone. Muscle to bone
What is epiphysis?
The end of a long bone, initially growing separately from the shaft. Growth plate.
How is a contusion
The injury causes tiny blood vessel’s called capillaries to burst, and the blood gets tracked below the skin surface.
What is a luxation?
An injury or a joint is forced out of a normal position. Dislocation.
What is a subluxation
A partial dislocation
What criteria is used to determine an injury?
An instance of being injured
What is a chronic injury? Give an example.
An injury that lasts a long time. Example arthritis.
What is an injury? Give an example.
An injury that happens quickly. Example bone fracture
What is a catastrophic injury?
An injury that can be deadly. Example injury to spinal cord
What is critical force
Magnitude of a single force that affects the structure.
What is a hematoma?
A solid swelling of clotted blood within the tissues
Examples of collision sports.
Football, ice hockey, lacrosse.
Give three examples of contacts sports.
Basketball, field hockey, girls lacrosse, soccer, wrestling
Give three examples of the limited contact sports
Baseball, sealed events, softball, volleyball.
Give three examples of non-contact sports
badminton, bowling, field events, golf, track, cross country, tennis.
What is a risk factor?
Any attributes, characteristic, or exposure to an individual that increases the likelihood of developing a disease or injury.
What is an intristic risk factor? Given example.
Internal to the body. Example dislocation of shoulder
What is an extrinsic risk factor? Give an example.
External to the body. Example field conditions or other players
